Books of the Week

This week’s picks explore the power of books, hidden histories, and the stories that connect us across time. From mysterious libraries and haunted halls to real hookup narratives of real people, these reads celebrate curiosity, discovery, and the enduring magic of the written word. Whether you enjoy suspense, history, or family favorites, there’s something here to check out and enjoy.

Adult Fiction – The Burning Library by Gilly Macmillan
A woman’s death uncovers a centuries-old secret tied to a missing medieval manuscript. As scholars and investigators race to uncover the truth, they become entangled in a dangerous battle over power, knowledge, and control.

Adult Nonfiction – The Face of Gettysburg edited by JoAnna M. McDonald
A moving collection of Civil War photographs donated by soldiers’ descendants, each paired with historical context that brings the faces and stories of Gettysburg to life.

Young Adult – The Library of Shadows by Rachel Moore
At one of the most haunted prep schools in the country, a student searching for answers about her father is pulled into a mystery involving ghosts, stolen books, and a very dangerous library.

Chapter Book – Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
Twelve kids are locked overnight in an extraordinary library and must solve puzzles and clues to escape in this fast-paced, puzzle-filled adventure.

Easy Fiction – If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff
A classic circular story that humorously follows a mouse’s growing list of requests after receiving a single cookie.

All titles are available now at the Sequatchie County Public Library. Stop by this week to explore these stories, uncover a mystery, or rediscover a favorite!

2/6 – Take Your Kid to the Library Day
10AM to 4:30PM

Take Your Kid to the Library Day is the first Saturday in February—but we’re celebrating a little early on Friday, 2/6!

Join us starting at 10:00 AM for a morning of fun with activity and game stations set up in the Family Room and Main Collection Room. Kids 18 and under can choose a free book and take a spin on our prize wheel!

Need help getting started with Libby, our free eBooks and audiobooks app? We’re happy to help any time!

Bring the kids and celebrate your library with us!

Read the Chattanooga Times Free Press with Free Access using our iPad

The iPad is locked to the Chattanooga Times Free Press app only, so you can enjoy the latest issues right here in the library. If you’d like to browse the internet or use other apps, you can access our library Wi-Fi on your own device or use one of our public computers. 📶💻

To borrow the iPad, you’ll need a current library card. Don’t worry — you can still view our physical copies of The Dunlap Tribune or use a public computer without a library card. 🪑📖

Library Awarded $20,000 Grant for Tennessee Celebration 🎉

The Sequatchie County Public Library has received a $20,000 Project Support Grant from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial, through the Tennessee State Museum. This funding will support “Stars & Stories Week” 🌟📖 during the final week of the 2026 Summer Reading Program, celebrating Tennessee’s 230th birthday 🎂 and the United States’ 250th anniversary 🇺🇸.

The week-long celebration will feature storytimes, teen and adult workshops, family-friendly events, and a Tennessee 250–themed parade float 🛷 built with help from community volunteers. The library will also partner with the community to highlight the unique voices and stories of Sequatchie County.

About the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial & Tennessee State Museum 🏛️
The Commission promotes an inclusive, statewide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and supports projects that preserve Tennessee’s unique stories, objects, and landmarks. Library Awarded $3,200 Grant for Family Arts Nights 🎨

The Sequatchie County Public Library has received $3,200 from the Tennessee Arts Commission and the Southeast Tennessee Development District to host four Special Family Night programs with the Creative Discovery Museum in early 2026 – Connecting Arts & Sciences!🖌️🧪

These interactive programs will take place at the library and provide hands-on art and science experiences for families, teens, and adults. Participants will have access to art supplies and activities that spark creativity, foster curiosity, and make the arts accessible to those who may not usually have opportunities to engage with them. Each program will explore the connections between art and science, allowing families to create together while teens and adults enjoy their own projects.

The Tennessee Arts Commission, created in 1967 by the Tennessee General Assembly, works to stimulate and encourage the visual, literary, music, and performing arts and to foster public interest in Tennessee’s cultural heritage. 🏛️

The Southeast Tennessee Development District advances communities in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia with a people-centered approach, focusing on care, building, and working together to enhance well-being while preserving each community’s unique culture and history. Through cost-effective staffing and impactful programs, they build successful partnerships with local governments, benefiting individuals, families, and businesses.

The library will promote the series through our website, social media, flyers, and local newspaper to ensure strong community participation and a welcoming, inclusive environment for everyone. ✨
